Drawing from director Jafar Panahi’s own prison experience and conversations with fellow inmates, It Was Just an Accident explores what such individuals might do after their release.
Synopsis:
What begins as a minor accident sets in motion a series of escalating consequences. An unassuming mechanic is reminded of his time in an Iranian prison when he encounters a man he suspects to be his sadistic jailhouse captor. Panicked, he rounds up a few of his fellow ex-prisoners to confirm the man’s identity.
Critics have awarded It Was Just an Accident a 98% Fresh rating on RottenTomatoes.com, with enthusiastic praise:
“It is just so intelligent; so blisteringly powerful; so light of touch. It is also one of those rare movies that manages to mix an unlikely trinity of shaggy-dog comedy, revenge thriller and seriously heavy political s–t.” – London Evening Standard
“Shot in secret under constant threat, It Was Just an Accident draws on director Jafar Panahi’s own harrowing experiences, infusing every frame with urgency and authenticity.” – Toronto Star
