Become a Board Member and have a say in the direction of your new Playhouse!
About the Chester Playhouse
For over eighty years, the building on Pleasant Street in Chester known as the Chester Playhouse has been bringing the community together to enjoy live performances of music, theatre, films, and more. After a devastating fire in 2021, an extensive rebuild, and a triumphant re-opening, the Chester Playhouse is dreaming big, working to engage and support our community, while presenting cultural events that are fun, exciting, and meaningful.
The Playhouse is governed by a passionate and committed volunteer Board of Directors who are responsible for ensuring a safe and respectful work environment for all staff and artists, fiscal responsibility and accountability to all funders and supporters, as well as being supporters and boosters for all Playhouse programs and events. The Board of Directors supports the company’s mission and works collaboratively with staff to ensure that the organisation operates successfully and reaches its full potential.
We need you!
We are actively seeking new Board members to guide our organisation.
This is an exciting opportunity for those who are passionate about the arts, and who wish to make a difference in their community. Your voice and perspective will be instrumental in helping to guide the new Playhouse and ensure that our programming connects to community members like you. You will also have the opportunity to bring your skills and experience to such areas as programming, financial management and sustainability, human resources, strategic planning, and more. Mentorship will be provided through the Chester Playhouse’s “Board Buddy” program, if desired. This role is appropriate for individuals aged 16 years and up.
In particular, we are eager to engage individuals with passion and/or expertise in arts programming, governance/leadership, finance, sustainability, and marketing & design.
Board Member Details/Responsibilities
- Participate in an enthusiastic environment that supports equity, diversity and inclusivity.
- Attend Board meetings throughout the year (between 8-10)
- Contribute to at least one Board Committee (e.g., Programming Advisory, Finance, Fund Development, Building, Nominating & Governance)
- Share your enthusiasm for Playhouse events with your friends, family and neighbours.
- Attend Playhouse productions and activities when possible.
- Participate in the growth and on-going success of the organisation through supporting various fundraising initiatives.
- Join our community of donors according to one’s ability.
Want to participate, but short on time? Why not join a committee! A committee of the board meets less frequently, and focuses on particular elements of the Playhouse operations – programming advisory, finance, fund development, etc. Joining a committee allows you to “try out” the board experience with a smaller time commitment, but still providing vital guidance to the Playhouse team.
Expressions of Interest
To apply for this role, please send a one page note explaining why you would like to be a part of the Playhouse volunteer leadership team. If you have a resume outlining your experience, please feel free to include that as well. Please send this letter to Executive Director Andrew Chandler (he/him) at info@chesterplayhouse.ca
The Chester Playhouse is eager to provide opportunities to applicants from all backgrounds, and is eager to accommodate the right person who brings a unique viewpoint to our organisation. We encourage all interested parties to reach out if they are interested to discuss how we can best accommodate your application.
All those interested will be contacted. Selected candidates will be forwarded to the Nominating Committee with interviews planned in the coming months.
(Note: Board Member terms typically begin at the Annual General Meeting of the Playhouse in late March but can begin at other times through the year as well.)
