Join us for the 2025 TIFF Official Selection that was also named to the “Canada’s Top Ten” list, Sk+te’kmujue’katik (At the Place of Ghosts), a Canadian supernatural thriller filmed right here in Nova Scotia!

In this haunting, visually immersive tale, two estranged Mi’kmaq brothers, Mise’l and Antle, are drawn back to Sk+te’kmujue’kati’k (the Place of Ghosts), a mystical forest where the living and the spirit world collide. Forced to confront the trauma of their past, the brothers embark on a harrowing quest riddled with visions of their childhood, ancestral memories and the unsettling forces that shaped their lives.

As they navigate this liminal realm, they must reconcile their fractured bond and face the ghosts — both literal and figurative — that haunt them. Blending Indigenous storytelling with supernatural suspense, the film is a meditative exploration of family, identity, and healing, where every step into the forest becomes a step toward self-discovery and spiritual reckoning.

At the Place of Ghosts was awarded Best Atlantic Feature and Best Cinematographer at the 2025 Atlantic International Film Festival (AIFF), as well as winning best original score, with compositions by Jeremy Dutcher.

“This is an epic quest, it’s a tragic life story, it’s about brotherly love, and it’s a ghost story set against a backdrop of childhood trauma… The story is specifically told by a M’ikmaq person, and that really makes this storytelling experience unique.” – Stereo Geeks

Compelling performances, atmospheric direction, and an evocative use of imagery help the film to stand out as a spirited exercise in genre-bending.” – Next Best Picture
