Consider staging your production, or hosting your event, in your Chester Playhouse!

The Chester Playhouse is a 183 soft-seat theatre in the heart of Chester, Nova Scotia, and is perfectly suited for small to medium-sized theatrical productions, concerts, presentations, seminars, and private movie screenings. 

State of the Art Technology

From digital wiring throughout to new sound and lighting systems, our theatre is fully equipped to enhance both the artist and audience experience. Our variable acoustic system, with moveable hard and soft panels, allows for the acoustics of the space to be tailored to suit each performance.

The Playhouse also has infrastructure for live-streaming and hybrid presentations, a new standard for performance venues.

Dance performances can be accommodated, though our small stage does limit the number of performers that can comfortably be performing at once. The stage floor has some spring, and our stores include dance marley that can be provided upon request. Our Yahama AvantGrand N3X digital baby-grand-style piano can be used for performances requiring it. 

Technicians from the Playhouse operate and oversee all events in our space, and additional technical support for your event can be provided, upon request. 

Accessible for all

The theatre lobby and audience seating are accessible via lift and serviced by an accessible washroom.  Audience seating includes six removeable theatre seats, in various sizes. The stage and backstage are also accessible, including the backstage washroom. A platform lift to the second floor lounge was added in January 2025. As well, the theatre features a Hearing Loop system for use by the hearing impaired.

Inviting Green Room

Our fully-equipped and spacious upstairs Green Room is the perfect place for artists to prepare for and relax after their performances, including a couch, fridge, microwave, and kitchenette. While this space is not currently fully accessible, the stage level includes an accessible washroom, and the tech room can be converted to a makeshift green room space for performers who require a fully accessible space.

Ready for Receptions, Meetings, & More

Our main floor Lobby Bar is fully equipped and can be operated by the Playhouse for receptions or special events.

Located on our second floor, The Ondaatje Room is a very functional, enclosed multipurpose room for use as a patron lounge or a meeting space and includes an accessible washroom. Home to some incredible original Nova Scotia art, it can accommodate up to 38 people standing (or smaller numbers seated around tables we can provide) and is available for social gatherings or presentations. Wi-Fi and a large flatscreen TV are available for use, allowing for presentations, Zoom meetings, video calls, etc.
